The rise of AI workloads in the enterprise has intensified the competition for compute resources between applications and essential infrastructure services. To address this, Red Hat has announced support for Red Hat OpenShift on NVIDIA BlueField Data Processing Units (DPUs). This integration provides a cloud-native platform that offloads networking, security, and storage tasks to the DPU, freeing up CPU resources for demanding AI applications and creating a more secure, performant foundation for AI factories.
Red Hat OpenShift now supports NVIDIA BlueField DPUs.
The integration offloads networking and security services from the CPU to the DPU.
This frees up CPU resources for AI application workloads, optimizing resource use.
Benefits include accelerated data plane performance and an improved security posture.
Support will be available as a technical preview in the coming weeks.
Future plans include support for BlueField-4 and NVIDIA Spectrum-X Ethernet networking.
Modern AI applications often compete with critical infrastructure services for CPU resources, leading to potential bottlenecks and security risks. Red Hat OpenShift on NVIDIA BlueField creates isolation between AI applications and the infrastructure workloads running on the DPU. This approach delivers optimized resource utilization by offloading services like networking and crypto processing, which accelerates data plane and storage traffic for demanding AI workloads.
Ryan King, vice president of AI and Infrastructure, Partner Ecosystem Success at Red Hat, commented on the collaboration, stating, “As the adoption of generative and agentic AI grows, the demand for advanced security and performance in datacenters has never been higher. Our collaboration with NVIDIA to enable Red Hat OpenShift support for NVIDIA BlueField DPUs provides customers with a more reliable, secure and high-performance platform to address this challenge and maximize their hardware investment.”
Justin Boitano, vice president of Enterprise Products at NVIDIA, added, “Data-intensive AI reasoning workloads demand a new era of secure and efficient infrastructure. The Red Hat OpenShift integration of NVIDIA BlueField builds on our longstanding work to empower organizations to achieve unprecedented scale and performance across their AI infrastructure.”
The integration offers several key advantages, including improved resource utilization for AI apps, accelerated data and storage traffic, advanced cloud networking with secure multi-tenancy, and an improved security posture by reducing the attack surface.
Support for NVIDIA BlueField on Red Hat OpenShift will be available as a technical preview soon. Looking ahead, Red Hat plans to integrate support for the upcoming, more powerful NVIDIA BlueField-4 DPU and NVIDIA Spectrum-X Ethernet networking, further enhancing performance and seamless connectivity for distributed AI workloads. This collaboration provides a critical building block for next-generation, cloud-native AI infrastructure.
