Formula E, in partnership with Google Cloud, announced a groundbreaking initiative on July 9, 2025, at the Google Cloud Summit in London to enhance motorsport accessibility for blind and visually impaired fans. By leveraging Google Cloud’s generative AI, this project delivers dynamic audio race reports for every E-Prix, making the excitement of electric racing inclusive and engaging. Developed with input from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), the initiative ensures the technology meets the needs of its intended audience.
The initiative, sparked at a Google Cloud Hackathon during the 2024 London E-Prix, uses Google Cloud’s Vertex AI to create vivid audio summaries of Formula E races. These reports, available shortly after each race, capture key moments like overtakes and strategic pit stops. Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, stated, “At Formula E, we believe the thrill of electric racing should be accessible to everyone. This innovative collaboration with Google Cloud is a fantastic example of how technology can be used for good, creating a brand-new way for blind and visually impaired fans to experience the drama and emotion of our sport.”
The audio reports are produced through a multi-stage process powered by Google Cloud’s AI platform. Google’s Chirp model transcribes live race commentary, while Gemini models analyze this data alongside live timing and official race information to generate fact-based summaries. Advanced text-to-speech technology then converts these summaries into natural, expressive audio. John Abel, Managing Director at Google Cloud, noted, “For too long, the visual nature of racing has been a barrier for fans who are blind or visually impaired. Google Cloud’s AI technology will act as a digital storyteller, creating a vivid audio narrative that brings the speed, strategy, and excitement of Formula E to life.”
The project’s collaboration with RNIB ensures the audio reports are tailored for visually impaired users. Focus groups and user testing during race weekends in Berlin and London will refine the technology before its Season 12 rollout. Sonali Rai, RNIB’s Media Culture and Immersive Technology Lead, emphasized, “RNIB has been working with Formula E and Google Cloud on this AI-powered podcast which promises to give a full picture of the race in an accessible and engaging way for blind and partially sighted racing fans.” This initiative sets a new standard for inclusivity in sports.
This collaboration between Formula E, Google Cloud, and RNIB demonstrates how AI can break down barriers, making motorsport accessible to all. By delivering multilingual, on-demand audio reports, the initiative ensures visually impaired fans can fully experience the thrill of Formula E racing.
