DefCon 33 Presentation Overview

Backblaze, Inc. will deliver a session titled “Tracking 300k+ Drives: What We’ve Learned After 13 Years” at DefCon 33, held August 7–10, 2025, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Presented by Pat Patterson, Chief Technical Evangelist, and Stephanie Doyle, Writer and Content Strategist, the talk will be held twice at the Data Duplication Village (LVCC-L2-W225) on August 8 and 9 at 1:00 p.m. The session will explore Backblaze’s extensive dataset, covering over four exabytes of data stored across more than 300,000 hard drives in global data centers. “Drive Stats is a content franchise that has built an incredible community of technical leaders who are passionate about data storage and use,” said Patrick Thomas, Backblaze Vice President of Marketing.

Advanced Data Processing Techniques

The presentation will detail how Backblaze has improved its Drive Stats data processing and failure validations using modern tools like Iceberg, Snowflake, and Trino. These advancements have streamlined the collection and analysis of drive performance metrics, ensuring more accurate and actionable insights. A live demo during the session will showcase these technologies in action, highlighting their role in managing one of the largest drive datasets in the industry. This focus on cutting-edge data processing underscores Backblaze’s commitment to operational excellence in cloud storage.

Hard Drive Performance and AFR Trends

Backblaze’s session will provide updated Annualized Failure Rate (AFR) trends, analyzing performance across various drive models and sizes. Notably, the Q2 2025 Drive Stats report revealed a collective AFR of 1.54% for smaller drives (12TB or less), with older models (five years or more) maintaining a 1.33% AFR, demonstrating resilience in aging hardware. The session will also dive into high-capacity drives (20TB and above), offering insights into their performance and reliability, critical for enterprises scaling their storage infrastructure.

SSD Challenges and Data Center Improvements

The talk will address challenges in tracking Solid State Drive (SSD) performance, including variability in failure rates due to limited data points for newer models. Backblaze’s insights have driven performance improvements in its data centers, optimizing drive selection and maintenance strategies. By sharing these findings, Backblaze aims to support hard drive manufacturers and foster innovation in data storage solutions, as emphasized by Patrick Thomas: “Sharing our primary source data and our process with the DefCon community is an incredible opportunity to spark new ideas and experiments.”

Backblaze’s DefCon 33 presentation highlights its leadership in cloud storage and data reliability, offering valuable insights for IT professionals, data center operators, and storage enthusiasts. By leveraging 13 years of Drive Stats data, the company continues to drive innovation and transparency in the industry.
