70% Frontline Workers Feel Replaceable Despite Pride in Work: Fountain

70% Frontline Workers Feel Replaceable Despite Pride in Work: Fountain

America's frontline workers take pride in their work, but they don't feel seen doing it. Seventy-seven percent are proud to tell people what they do, 68% say their manager regularly or sometimes asks for their input, and 63% feel respected by the customers they serve.

Yet many feel their contribution goes unrecognized. Forty-seven percent say frontline workers are underappreciated given how essential they are to the economy, 56% say most people have no idea how stressful the work really is, and 69% feel at least somewhat replaceable.

These are among the findings of a Propeller Insights survey of 1,014 U.S. frontline workers, conducted in June 2026 and commissioned by Fountain, the AI-native platform for managing the global frontline workforce.

  • Fountain survey of 1,014 U.S. frontline workers finds 69% feel at least somewhat replaceable despite 77% being proud of their work.
  • 47% say frontline workers are underappreciated, 56% say people have no idea how stressful the work is.
  • Top day-to-day frictions are unpredictable schedule changes at 41%, no clear advancement path at 31% and little control over work at 30%.
  • 45% say technology has made their day-to-day job easier, with scheduling as the task they are most comfortable letting AI handle.
  • Survey is second set of results from June 2026 study, following July release on AI's role in hiring.
  • Findings highlight need for mobile-first hiring that gives workers control over time and application process.

Frontline Workforce Pride Versus Feeling Replaceable

The survey reveals a portrait of a committed, capable workforce that feels overlooked by the wider public and by a hiring system that too often runs on everyone's schedule but theirs. While 77% are proud to tell people what they do and 63% feel respected by customers, the sense of being undervalued persists.

This is the second set of results from that survey, following July's release on how workers view AI's role in hiring. Together they highlight the disconnect between worker commitment and recognition.

Friction Is About Time and Control

Ask frontline workers what wears them down, and they’ll tell you it isn't the work, but rather the lack of control around it.

Their biggest day-to-day frictions are unpredictable, last-minute schedule changes at 41%, no clear path to advancement at 31%, and having little say over when and how they work at 30%. Left unaddressed, this all takes a toll with roughly one in four feeling pessimistic about the future of frontline work in America.

"So much of feeling valued at work comes down to control over your own time," said Tanya Carlson, senior vice president of customer success at Fountain. "When the hiring process bends to the worker's schedule, it's a form of respect."

Where Technology Can Help Frontline Workers

In the survey, frontline workers expressed optimism about the role technology plays in the workplace. And while there is robust debate about the impact of AI technologies on jobs, frontline workers expressed more openness to accepting it when it works for them. Forty-five percent say technology has already made their day-to-day job easier, and their willingness to accept it climbs sharply when it hands them control, with scheduling being the task they're most comfortable letting AI handle.

That's the gap Fountain’s technology closes. Its mobile-first platform lets candidates apply, schedule, and onboard from a phone, moving through hiring on their own time instead of waiting on a recruiter to call back, turning the exact friction workers cite into something they control.

"So much of feeling valued at work comes down to control over your own time," said Tanya Carlson, senior vice president of customer success at Fountain. "When the hiring process bends to the worker's schedule instead of the other way around, that isn't just convenient; it's a form of respect. Technology finally makes that possible at scale, and workers can feel the difference."

Frontline workforce management is evolving to prioritize worker control over scheduling and hiring, with AI-native platforms helping organizations improve retention and candidate engagement while addressing the core friction of unpredictable work.
