Nokia has announced a significant expansion of its data center networking portfolio, introducing new high-performance switches and enhanced AI-driven automation tools. These innovations are designed to meet the escalating performance, scalability, and operational demands of connecting advanced AI workloads, particularly those driven by the rise of agentic AI applications.

  • Nokia launches new 7220 IXR-H6 data center switches with 102.4 Tb/s throughput.

  • The switches feature 1.6 Terabit Ethernet interfaces, doubling previous performance.

  • An enhanced Event-Driven Automation (EDA) platform adds agentic AIOps capabilities.

  • These AIOps tools have been shown to reduce data center network downtime by 96%.

  • The portfolio addresses the massive scalability needs of AI factories with up to a million XPUs.

  • Switches offer flexibility with both air and liquid cooling, and support for SR Linux or SONiC.

Meeting the Demands of Agentic AI

The widespread adoption of agentic AI is reshaping data center requirements, driving the need for unprecedented network performance and intelligent operations. Nokia's new 7220 IXR-H6 switches are engineered to address this, delivering breakthrough throughput of 102.4 Tb/s with 1.6 TE interface speeds. This doubles throughput and interface performance within the same footprint, providing the extreme scalability needed for large-scale AI training and inference environments. The switches are compliant with Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC) specifications, optimizing packet flows and driving efficiency in AI factories scaling to one million XPUs and beyond.

AI-Enabled Automation for Operational Excellence

Alongside the hardware, Nokia is leveraging AI to transform data center operations. The company has introduced agentic AI-enabled capabilities into its Event-Driven Automation (EDA) platform. EDA AIOps combines natural language interactions with the reasoning power of agentic AI to enable fast and accurate issue identification, root cause analysis, and remediation. When integrated with EDA's real-time telemetry and digital twin capabilities, this allows network operators to achieve a 96% reduction in data center network downtime, according to a Bell Labs Consulting and Futurum report.

Strategic Flexibility and Industry Endorsement

The new portfolio emphasizes flexibility to suit diverse deployment scenarios. The 7220 IXR-H6 switches are available in both liquid-cooled and air-cooled variants. Furthermore, Nokia is the only vendor offering hardware that supports both its embedded SR Linux Network Operating System and the open-source Community SONiC, giving operators greater choice. Alan Weckel, Founder and Technology Analyst at 650 Group, noted, “The 1.6 TE interface speeds on Nokia’s new family of 7220 IXR switches hit a sweet spot in the market as agentic AI compels a change in data center networking requirements. Agentic AI-powered AIOps on Nokia’s EDA platform is timely, driving increased operational efficiency and reliability.”

Vach Kompella, Senior Vice President and General Manager of IP Networks at Nokia, stated, “Today marks one of many milestones for Nokia’s data center networking portfolio, and we look forward to bringing even more technology innovation to our global customer base to support the AI super-cycle.” The 7220 IXR-H6 switches will be available in the first quarter of 2026, with the EDA AIOps features available for deployment by the end of 2025.
