The adoption of agentic AI is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, yet most organizations are unprepared for the fundamental operational changes it demands. This is the central finding of the ninth annual global AI research study from MIT Sloan Management Review and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Titled "The Emerging Agentic Enterprise," the report reveals that while 35% of companies are already exploring agentic AI and 44% plan to deploy it soon, few have developed the necessary frameworks for workflow redesign, governance, and talent strategy.

Quick Intel

  • A new MIT SMR & BCG report details the rapid rise of agentic AI.

  • 35% of companies are exploring it, with 44% planning deployment.

  • 76% of executives view agentic AI as more like a coworker than a tool.

  • Leaders expect major changes to operating models and governance.

  • 95% at leading organizations report AI increases job satisfaction.

  • The technology demands new management approaches blending HR and asset techniques.

Redefining the Relationship Between AI and People

The study highlights a fundamental shift in how AI is perceived within the enterprise. Unlike previous technologies, agentic AI systems are seen as autonomous teammates capable of executing multi-step processes. A significant 76% of surveyed executives view agentic AI as more like a coworker than a tool. This duality creates a new management challenge. Report coauthor Sam Ransbotham, an analytics professor at Boston College, explained, “Historically, we had a nice, clean separation between technology and people... But agentic AI is neither a tool nor a teammate — it's both and thrives in that blur. The organizations that will succeed are those that recognize agentic AI's dual nature as a feature, not a bug.”

The Organizational Impact of Widespread Adoption

The data shows that leading organizations are anticipating profound changes. A majority (66%) of agentic AI leaders expect changes to their operating models, and 58% anticipate governance structure changes within three years. The report also points to a significant shift in talent strategy, with 43% of leaders anticipating a greater willingness to hire generalists over specialists, and 45% expecting a reduction in middle management layers. Shervin Khodabandeh, a BCG managing director and coauthor, emphasized the strategic imperative: “Agentic AI has the power to transform entire workflows and challenge existing business processes. The organizations that will succeed are those that put in the effort to reimagine their processes and not just force-fit agentic AI into existing ones.”
