MariaDB plc announced on August 26, 2025, the acquisition of SkySQL Inc., bringing its AI-powered, serverless Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) platform back into the MariaDB portfolio. Originally developed by MariaDB and spun off in 2023, SkySQL’s advanced capabilities enhance MariaDB Cloud, offering flexible, scalable, and AI-driven database solutions for enterprises.
SkySQL, spun off in December 2023, advanced its DBaaS with serverless technology and agentic AI, including SkyAI agents for natural language queries and SkyCopilot for database optimization. The reacquisition aligns with customer demand for flexible deployment options. “Our customers have made it clear that they want flexibility,” said Rohit de Souza, CEO of MariaDB. “Acquiring SkySQL helps accelerate plans and adds further innovation to MariaDB Cloud.”
MariaDB Cloud now integrates SkySQL’s capabilities, offering provisioned and serverless modes across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. This supports MariaDB Enterprise Platform, delivering top-tier performance, security, and high availability. “SkySQL’s level of sophistication… is extremely impressive,” said Vikas Mathur, Chief Product Officer. The platform’s agentic AI enables developers to interact with data using plain English, reducing reliance on SQL and supporting GenAI applications.
The global DBaaS market, valued at $25B in 2024, is projected to grow at a 22% CAGR through 2030, per IDC. Enterprises are shifting to cloud databases for scalability and cost efficiency, as noted in IDC’s 2025-2029 forecast. MariaDB’s reacquisition addresses this trend, competing with providers like MongoDB and Snowflake. SkySQL’s serverless offering and AI features, such as semantic agents, position MariaDB to lead in AI-driven workloads.
MariaDB, taken private by K1 Investment Management in September 2024, has regained momentum with this acquisition, following the Galera Cluster purchase and Enterprise Platform enhancements, which won the 2025 DBTA Readers’ Choice Award. The integration of SkySQL’s team, led by CTO Jags Ramnarayan, strengthens MariaDB’s 600+ employee base and global reach, serving clients like Deutsche Bank and Samsung.
MariaDB’s acquisition of SkySQL reinforces its leadership in cloud-native database solutions, leveraging AI and serverless technology to meet enterprise demands for flexibility and innovation, positioning it as a default platform for GenAI applications.
MariaDB seeks to eliminate the constraints and complexity of proprietary databases, enabling organizations to reinvest in what matters most – rapidly developing innovative, customer-facing applications. Enterprises can depend on a single complete database for all their needs, that can be deployed in minutes for transactional, analytical and hybrid use cases. Trusted by organizations such as Deutsche Bank, DBS Bank, Red Hat, ServiceNow and Samsung – MariaDB delivers customer value without the financial burden of legacy database providers.
