Instructure, the leading learning ecosystem and maker of Canvas LMS, today launched IgniteAI Agent, initially available in the United States and Latin America. This marks a significant step in the company's vision to serve as the trusted, long-term partner for the future of learning. Powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), IgniteAI Agent extends the IgniteAI suite beyond standalone tools, delivering secure, transparent workflow orchestration that supports the transition to agentic AI—where technology handles low-value, time-consuming tasks to enhance human capabilities in education.

IgniteAI Agent enables AI to perform complex, multi-step operations on behalf of educators and administrators while maintaining institutional oversight, transparency, and trust. This shifts focus from system navigation to high-impact activities such as student mentoring, personalized feedback, and meaningful instructional design.

"When we launched IgniteAI, we promised an ecosystem where AI works for educators, not around them," said Shiren Vijiasingam, chief product officer at Instructure. "IgniteAI Agent is the realization of that promise. It moves us beyond generic content creation to true agentic support that can be opted into to securely orchestrate time-saving workflows while educators stay in charge of educational outcomes."

Quick Intel

  • Instructure launches IgniteAI Agent, powered by AWS, initially in the US and Latin America.
  • Part of the IgniteAI suite, it enables agentic AI for multi-step workflow automation in Canvas.
  • Automates routine tasks like rubric generation, content alignment, discussion reviews, module creation, due date adjustments, and complementary content sourcing.
  • Designed as an open, extensible agent that integrates with partner technologies and embeds capabilities into educator workflows.
  • Governed by privacy-first principles: closed-loop architecture, strict opt-in controls, and transparent AI Nutrition Facts disclosures.
  • Early adopters, such as Hinds Community College, are using it for module building, page design, accessibility improvements, and accelerated content creation.

IgniteAI Agent leverages Amazon Bedrock to automate end-to-end processes across Canvas with a single prompt, reducing manual effort across tabs and steps. It supports educators by coordinating actions that align with course goals while preserving control over educational decisions.

Early real-world application demonstrates its impact. Brandon Mitchell, Director of Instructional Design and Technology at Hinds Community College, noted:

"For us, the power of IgniteAI and the Agent isn't theoretical. We're using it right now to build modules, design pages, clean up accessibility, and speed up content creation. And we're excited to keep testing and pushing the boundaries, because the potential is enormous."

Delivering the Agentic Future of Teaching and Learning

IgniteAI Agent focuses on workflows that reduce administrative load, promote consistency, and support equitable, outcomes-focused instruction. By automating repetitive tasks, it allows educators to prioritize relationship-building, feedback, and adaptive teaching practices.

Instructure is collaborating with edtech partners to make IgniteAI Agent extensible, enabling secure integration of external capabilities directly into Canvas workflows for seamless, frictionless use.

Trust, Transparency and Institutional Control by Design

The agent adheres to IgniteAI's privacy-first governance model:

  • Closed-loop architecture keeps interactions within the institution's environment; customer data does not train external models.
  • Opt-in controls allow activation at institutional, departmental, or course levels.
  • AI Nutrition Facts provide full disclosure of models, data access, and protections.

"It is not enough to simply automate tasks. As AI takes on more responsibility, we must bring quality, rigor and verification to how educational outcomes are defined and measured," said Vijiasingam. "IgniteAI Agent is designed to be that accountability layer, ensuring that as we scale efficiency, we also elevate the integrity of the learning process while keeping the educator front and center. This is agentic technology built for education, responsibly, transparently and in partnership with our customers."

As institutions progress from AI experimentation to demonstrable impact, IgniteAI Agent positions AI as a supportive tool for elevating teaching and learning quality rather than an end goal in itself.
