IBM unveiled major updates to its Bob software development platform, expanding its capabilities beyond AI-assisted coding into a comprehensive agentic software engineering platform.

Designed for enterprise development teams, Bob enables AI to coordinate tasks across the software development lifecycle instead of limiting automation to code generation. The platform helps organizations manage development workflows, validation, modernization, governance, and AI execution within existing engineering environments.

New Multi-Agent AI and Bobalytics Improve Enterprise Development

As enterprises increasingly adopt AI for software engineering, many organizations are facing new bottlenecks around code review, validation, governance, and operational oversight.

IBM addresses these challenges through several new capabilities, including:

  • Multi-agent AI execution that coordinates specialized AI agents across development tasks.
  • Bobalytics, a built-in analytics dashboard providing visibility into AI usage, productivity, quality, performance, and cost.
  • Parallel model-native tool calling, allowing AI models to execute multiple tools simultaneously.

Available Premium Packages include:

  • IBM Z for COBOL, PL/I modernization, and JCL analysis.

Financial technology provider Jack Henry uses IBM Bob to accelerate RPG development, improve code quality, and help developers better understand decades of accumulated system knowledge.

Meanwhile, cloud consulting company Blue Pearl applied IBM Bob to a legacy modernization initiative that was originally projected to take nine months with 14 engineers. According to the company, the project was completed in just three days using IBM Bob's AI-driven modernization workflows.
