CGI, a global leader in IT and business consulting, has announced the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence in Portugal. Scheduled to become operational in early May, the center is designed to accelerate the adoption of Agentic and Generative AI technologies. By integrating this hub into its existing Portuguese operations—which currently employs over 2,000 professionals—CGI aims to enhance its capacity to deliver responsible, scalable AI solutions that drive measurable business outcomes for its international clientele.
Strategic Focus: Specializes in the development and deployment of Agentic AI and Generative AI solutions.
Operational Timeline: The center will be fully operational in early May 2026 within CGI's Portugal division.
European Hub: Supports multiple high-value markets including Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Academic Collaboration: Strengthening ties with Portuguese universities to foster technical talent and advance AI research.
Industry Applications: Delivers specialized AI solutions for banking, healthcare, service management, and utilities.
Global Delivery Network: Replaces fragmented support with a centralized hub for designing, building, and running AI-enabled enterprise systems.
The creation of the AI Center of Excellence marks a significant expansion of CGI's global delivery capabilities. Positioned as a growing European hub, the center will assist organizations in navigating the complexities of digital transformation. By focusing on "Agentic AI"—systems capable of autonomous action and reasoning—CGI plans to move clients beyond simple automation toward more sophisticated, decision-supportive intelligence layers.
"Our AI Center in Portugal will further position CGI to deliver AI-enabled transformation across industries worldwide. By expanding our AI capabilities, we help clients improve operations, optimize decision-making, and realize measurable business value," said Gonçalo Lança, Senior Vice-President, Consulting Delivery, CGI.
Beyond client delivery, the initiative serves to reinforce Portugal's role as a vital node in CGI’s global infrastructure. The focus on academic partnerships ensures a continuous pipeline of skilled talent to support long-term innovation. Current projects managed from the region already include computer vision for healthcare and advanced operational optimization for the utilities sector, demonstrating the diverse utility of the new center’s mission.
"Portugal plays a central role in CGI's global delivery network. This initiative strengthens our local teams and expertise, reinforcing our position as a hub for AI innovation and fostering collaboration with the academic community to develop technical talent," said Carlos Lourenço, Senior Vice-President, CGI in Portugal.
As part of CGI’s local relationship model, the center will complement the company’s global delivery network, providing the specialized resources necessary to help clients scale AI adoption with confidence and speed.
