At Think 2026 in Boston, Aramco and IBM announced an intended collaboration to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence, agentic AI, automation, and material science within the industrial sector. This partnership aims to integrate IBM’s enterprise AI platforms and consulting expertise with Aramco’s massive industrial data assets and 90 years of energy-sector knowledge to solve complex, large-scale operational challenges.

Mission-Critical Environments: A specific emphasis on enhancing reliability, safety, and operational resilience in energy systems.
Historical Context: The two organizations have maintained a continuous partnership since 1947.

While many AI applications focus on consumer productivity, the Aramco-IBM collaboration targets the "industrial frontier." By exploring agentic AI—AI that can plan, reason, and execute complex tasks—the partnership seeks to modernize mission-critical environments where safety and precision are paramount.
"This collaboration enables us to assess how industrial AI... can further enhance operational excellence and resilience," said Sami Al Ajmi, Senior Vice President of Digital & Information Technology at Aramco. "Particularly in reliability, safety, and mission-critical environments."
The collaboration is designed as a "best-of-both-worlds" integration:
Aramco’s Contribution: Vast scale of industrial operations, proprietary data assets, and deep energy-specific domain expertise.
IBM’s Contribution: Enterprise-grade hybrid cloud (watsonx), research innovation, and global consulting capabilities.
Saad Toma, General Manager of IBM Middle East and Africa, noted that combining innovation with advanced technology represents the "next frontier in enterprise transformation," reinforcing a shared commitment to addressing global industrial challenges.
The relationship between IBM and Aramco spans nearly 80 years, evolving from foundational mainframe systems to the current era of hybrid cloud and generative AI. This latest announcement signals a move toward sovereign industrial intelligence, ensuring that the specialized knowledge of the energy sector is captured and optimized through modern AI frameworks.
