Unchecked agentic AI is emerging as one of the most pressing security concerns for modern organizations. A new e-book by JumpCloud underscores the dangerous gap between widespread AI adoption and the lack of governance structures to manage its autonomous risks effectively.

Growing Risks of Agentic AI

Unlike traditional software, agentic AI functions with autonomy, executing tasks without constant oversight. While this makes AI agents powerful digital coworkers, it also exposes organizations to unprecedented risks. JumpCloud’s report highlights that most organizations are underprepared, with adoption outpacing governance.

Alarming Governance Gap

The report reveals that although 82% of companies have begun using AI agents, only 44% have implemented formal governance policies. This discrepancy presents a significant vulnerability, as organizations leave themselves exposed to emerging threats created by autonomous systems.

“Agentic AI's ability to act independently is its biggest risk,” said Joel Rennich, senior vice president of product management at JumpCloud. “Without the right guardrails, it can cause unintended data loss, financial mistakes, or even compliance violations before anyone realizes what's happening.”

Identity-First Governance Approach

The e-book stresses the importance of treating AI agents as digital identities. By applying the same oversight mechanisms used for human and non-human identities (NHIs), organizations can ensure accountability and security. This includes assigning each AI agent a unique identity and continuously monitoring their activities in real time.

A Resource for IT and Security Leaders

JumpCloud’s “Who Let the Bot In?” is designed as a hands-on guide for IT administrators and CISOs who are racing to address the rising challenges of agentic AI. In addition to warning about potential risks, the report provides a Risk Readiness Checklist that helps organizations proactively assess their preparedness. The e-book is now available for download.

The rising prevalence of agentic AI underscores the urgent need for a robust governance framework. As adoption accelerates, organizations must adapt by embedding security and identity-first practices at the core of their AI strategies.
