CANAL+ and Google Cloud have announced a transformative multi-year partnership focused on integrating advanced artificial intelligence into the global media landscape. Starting in June 2026, CANAL+ will deploy Google Cloud’s latest generative AI technologies across its European and African markets. The collaboration aims to redefine how content is indexed, discovered, and produced, leveraging Google's multimodal AI and video generation tools to scale personalized experiences for its 40 million global subscribers.

  • Deployment Date: June 2026 across European and African markets.

  • Core Technology: Google Cloud’s multimodal video indexing and Veo generative video technology.

  • Enhanced Discovery: AI-driven sound, video, and text classification for hyper-personalized recommendations.

  • Creative Tools: Production teams can use AI to previsualize scenes and recreate historical moments.

  • Security: Integrated platform ensures full protection of rights and asset ownership.

  • Global Scale: Partnership supports the newly integrated CANAL+ and MultiChoice Group ecosystem.

Scaling Personalization with Multimodal Indexing

Using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI and content video indexing technologies, CANAL+ will accelerate the classification of its massive content library. By building an in-depth multimodal database that combines sound, video, and text, the CANAL+ App will be able to offer subscribers much sharper content discovery. Instead of generic suggestions, the platform will match subscribers' granular viewing habits with specific scene data, making the homepage truly personal.

"Content video indexing for CANAL+ at scale gives the group a significant edge," said Stéphane Baumier, CTO of CANAL+. "It enables us to deliver sharper discovery and truly enhanced personalized journeys on the CANAL+ App across all our markets."

A New Creative Frontier with Google Veo

In a major step for AI-driven production, CANAL+ will leverage Veo, Google's state-of-the-art generative video model. This will provide production partners with a secure technical environment to experiment with "impossible" scenes—such as previsualizing complex cinematography before shooting or upscaling archival photos into high-fidelity historical recreations.

Importantly, the partnership emphasizes a secure technical environment. Production teams maintain full editorial control and asset ownership, using AI to shorten experimentation cycles and control costs while ensuring that creative decision-making remains human-led.

Architecting the Future of Media

This partnership follows CANAL+'s 2025 integration of MultiChoice Group, Africa’s leading entertainment platform. With a footprint in over 70 countries, the combined group is positioning itself as a tech-forward media giant.

"The entertainment industry is at a pivotal inflection point where the intersection of creativity and compute power defines market leadership," said Matt Renner, President and CRO of Google Cloud. "CANAL+ is not just adopting tools; they are architecting the future of media."
