Fastly Becomes First Edge Cloud Platform Provider in DIMPACT

Fastly has announced its participation in DIMPACT, an industry coalition that brings together organizations working to develop science-based approaches for measuring and reducing the environmental impact of delivering digital media.

As the first edge cloud platform provider to join the initiative, Fastly will provide infrastructure expertise and transparent emissions calculation methodologies that can help improve industry-wide understanding of digital media emissions.

The collaboration is expected to benefit media companies, streaming providers, publishers, and other organizations seeking greater visibility into the environmental impact of their digital operations.

"We're thrilled to welcome Fastly to the DIMPACT initiative. Their participation strengthens DIMPACT's ability to advance a more accurate, data-driven approach to measuring and reducing digital emissions," said Jason Bell, Director at SLR Consulting and Executive Sponsor of DIMPACT. "Accurately calculating digital emissions requires a deep understanding of every hop data takes from the origin to the end-user device. Fastly's expertise at the edge fills a crucial piece of the puzzle, moving the industry closer to a transparent, standardized blueprint for digital decarbonization."

Supporting Digital Carbon Footprint Measurement

As digital media consumption continues to grow, organizations are placing greater emphasis on reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated throughout their value chains.

DIMPACT provides research, analytical tools, and shared resources that help companies measure the carbon footprint associated with serving digital media products while encouraging industry-wide collaboration on emissions reduction.

Fastly's contribution includes operational data from its edge cloud infrastructure, enabling more accurate modeling of emissions associated with content delivery across the internet.

Addressing the Sustainability Impact of AI and Digital Content

Fastly noted that the increasing volume of digital content, including AI-generated traffic, is changing internet infrastructure requirements and increasing the need for sustainable content delivery practices.

By participating in DIMPACT, the company aims to provide organizations with detailed operational insights that support more informed decisions around digital infrastructure efficiency and environmental performance.

The collaboration aligns with broader industry efforts to improve transparency in digital sustainability reporting and establish standardized methodologies for measuring digital emissions.

"As digital content, including AI-generated traffic, continues to reshape the internet, we want to empower the digital media sector with the granular data and actionable insights needed for companies to understand and optimize their digital footprints. We are committed to industry-wide collaboration to ensure the internet of the future is not just faster and more secure, but also more sustainable," said Eoghan Kelly, who leads Sustainability at Fastly. "We're looking forward to collaborating with DIMPACT participants and supporting the industry in moving towards the decarbonization of digital content distribution."

Industry Collaboration for Sustainable Digital Infrastructure

DIMPACT brings together organizations, policymakers, and industry leaders to develop practical frameworks for reducing emissions associated with digital media delivery.

With Fastly's participation, the coalition gains additional visibility into edge computing infrastructure, helping create more comprehensive models for evaluating the environmental impact of internet content delivery.

The initiative reflects growing industry efforts to balance digital innovation, cloud performance, and sustainability as organizations continue expanding online services and AI-powered applications.
