Employer job postings for information technology occupations have reached their highest monthly volume in the past year, signaling robust demand for tech talent. According to an analysis by CompTIA, there were 474,293 active job postings for technology positions in October, a significant increase of 5.3% from September. This growth in tech hiring intent notably outpaced the 2.3% increase seen across the entire labor market during the same period.

  • Active tech job postings surged to 474,293 in October, a 12-month high.

  • Hiring intent grew 5.3% month-over-month, outpacing the overall labor market.

  • Demand for Artificial Intelligence skills in job postings has nearly doubled year-over-year.

  • Other high-growth skills include cloud infrastructure, scalability, and CI/CD.

  • Professional services, manufacturing, and finance sectors showed strong hiring intent.

  • Despite economic concerns, the data indicates sustained, widespread demand for tech roles.

A Closer Look at October's Hiring Surge

The October total includes 217,238 postings that were newly added by employers, which is up 3.8% from September. Both new and active job postings have now reached their highest level since October 2024. Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA, commented on the trend, stating, "Given the prevailing vibe of economic unease, the better-than-expected volume of tech job listings is a welcome bit of good news. Once again it speaks to the many moving parts of the vast tech workforce and the not always apparent offsetting effects of job gains, job losses and job transitions."

Sector and Geographic Distribution of Tech Jobs

Hiring intent was strong across several key industry sectors, including Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (626,740 YTD postings), Manufacturing (260,053), and Finance and Insurance (167,440). The Information, Software and Media sector notably saw a 23% year-over-year increase in tech job listings. Geographically, postings were widely dispersed. States such as New Jersey, Illinois, and Pennsylvania saw some of the largest month-over-month percentage increases, while major metro areas like San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Chicago also experienced significant growth in tech job listings.

In-Demand Skills and Experience Levels

An examination of the specific skills requested in job postings reveals a strong focus on emerging and foundational technologies. Employer listings for Artificial Intelligence skills have grown 97% year-over-year. Cloud infrastructure, scalability, CI/CD, and Python programming also featured prominently with substantial year-over-year growth. In terms of experience, the distribution of hiring remains stable across career levels, with 21% of openings targeting entry-level professionals (0-3 years), 29% for mid-level (4-7 years), and 17% for senior-level (8+ years) candidates.

The data presents a clear picture: the appetite for technology talent remains strong, driven by corporate investments in key areas like AI, cloud, and automation. This demand spans industries and experience levels, offering opportunities for a wide range of tech professionals.
