IQM Quantum Computers, selected through VTT’s innovation partner tender, will deliver a 150-qubit superconducting quantum computer by mid-2026, followed by a 300-qubit system in late 2027. “This 300-qubit superconducting quantum computer has most superconducting qubits procured anywhere in the world. In addition, the delivery schedule is quick,” says Piia Konstari, Project Manager for VTT’s quantum computer tendering process. These systems will integrate with Finland’s high-performance computing infrastructure, enabling hybrid computing solutions that combine classical and quantum processing for enhanced computational power.
The partnership includes a cloud platform, allowing businesses and university researchers to access these advanced quantum systems. “We are excited to continue our long-term partnership with VTT and ship our next generation of quantum computers to power Finland’s quantum ecosystem,” says Mikko Välimäki, Co-CEO of IQM Quantum Computers. A two-year maintenance contract ensures sustained performance post-delivery. Additionally, VTT will allocate quantum computing time to companies and universities, with limited free access for qualifying applications to spur innovation.
The project emphasizes developing new hardware components and fabrication processes for future quantum computers. “During the project, we will develop new devices and fabrication processes for next-generation quantum computers to ensure Finland’s leadership position in critical technologies,” says Pekka Pursula, Director, Microelectronics and Quantum Research at VTT. By combining Finland’s expertise in material modelling with quantum computing, the initiative aims to create a global competitive advantage in computational methods and algorithms.
VTT’s mission is to drive technological advancement in Finland. “VTT’s main task is to promote the development of the Finnish society. We believe that a low threshold for use will accelerate the ability of companies and universities to research and develop applications for quantum computing. This will be a key competitive asset for Finland in the near future,” says Erja Turunen, Executive Vice President, Digital Technologies at VTT. The initiative, supported by a EUR 70 million government grant, underscores Finland’s commitment to leading quantum innovation.
This landmark project not only elevates Finland’s role in the global quantum computing landscape but also fosters practical applications across industries. By integrating cutting-edge quantum systems with national infrastructure and expertise, Finland is poised to unlock new possibilities in technology and research, cementing its position at the forefront of the quantum revolution.
