During MWC Shanghai 2026, the AI-ON Summit themed “Networks for AI, AI for Networks” brought together global telecom stakeholders, including China’s MIIT ICT Committee, CAICT, leading operators, industry partners, and Huawei. The summit focused on the evolution of optical networks in the era of Token monetization, highlighting how AI and advanced connectivity infrastructure are converging to reshape digital services. Huawei also introduced new AI-ON innovations aimed at accelerating AI-centric all-optical network deployment and enabling scalable AI service adoption across industries.
The AI-ON Summit served as a key platform to discuss the future of optical networking and AI integration. Industry leaders examined how telecom infrastructure is transitioning from traditional connectivity models to intelligent, AI-powered systems designed for high-speed computing access and next-generation digital services. The discussions highlighted the growing importance of ultra-gigabit broadband and 10 Gbps service upgrades in enabling scalable AI adoption.
At the summit, Huawei introduced 10 AI-Optical Network (AI-ON) innovative products and solutions aimed at accelerating the transition to AI-centric all-optical networks. These include advancements in AI-FTTR solutions such as AI home hubs, AI smart boxes, and Wi-Fi 7-based FTTR systems.
For higher bandwidth demands, Huawei launched a high-density 50G PON service board for commercial deployment and upgraded FTTR solutions supporting tri-band Wi-Fi 7 configurations. The company also introduced solutions targeting 1 ms computing networks, including Mini OXC, OSU/fgOTN integration, and OTN with QKD capabilities.
In addition, Huawei expanded its portfolio for data center interconnect (DCI) with ultra-large OTN cluster solutions and submarine-terrestrial integrated systems, alongside resilience-focused technologies such as AI DAS and 50 ms WSON.
The summit emphasized the shift toward Token monetization as a new framework for value creation in telecom networks. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has already outlined the ION-2030 vision for next-generation optical networks, reinforcing the convergence of AI and optical infrastructure.
Industry perspectives highlighted how AI-ON systems will support distributed computing, large-scale AI models, and autonomous network evolution. This transition is also enabling telecom operators to move from traditional connectivity services toward intelligent, service-driven monetization models.
Operators including China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Zain Jordan, and Shunwang Technology shared real-world deployments of AI-driven network services. These include enhanced home broadband experiences, proactive service management, and integrated computing-network offerings for enterprise customers.
The focus is shifting toward maximizing the value of existing infrastructure by improving bandwidth quality, introducing value-added services, and expanding AI-powered digital service ecosystems. This marks a broader industry move toward sustainable revenue growth through intelligent network transformation.
The AI-ON framework positions optical networks as a foundational layer for AI-driven economies. By integrating computing, connectivity, and intelligent automation, operators are expected to accelerate the rollout of ultra-high-speed broadband, low-latency computing access, and resilient global connectivity systems.
