  • Westinghouse and Google Cloud use AI to streamline AP1000 reactor construction.

  • HiVE and bertha AI solutions leverage 75 years of Westinghouse nuclear data.

  • Partnership enhances efficiency in modular construction and plant operations.

  • Proof of concept achieved with Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, Gemini, and BigQuery.

  • AP1000 is the only fully licensed, construction-ready modular reactor in the U.S.

  • AI tools aim to deliver reliable, cost-effective nuclear energy globally.

AI-Powered Nuclear Construction

Westinghouse and Google Cloud are combining their expertise to revolutionize nuclear reactor construction. “As the only fully licensed, construction ready modular reactor available today, our AP1000® technology is the quickest way to add new sources of affordable and abundant nuclear energy to the U.S. grid,” said Dan Sumner, Westinghouse Interim Chief Executive Officer. By integrating Westinghouse’s HiVE and bertha AI solutions with Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, Gemini, and BigQuery, the partnership has achieved a proof of concept for autonomously generating and optimizing AP1000 modular construction work packages, streamlining processes and reducing costs.

Enhancing Nuclear Plant Operations

The collaboration extends beyond construction to improve the performance of existing nuclear power plants. “This partnership with Westinghouse combines Google Cloud’s AI technologies and expertise with Westinghouse’s century-long expertise in nuclear innovation to chart a new path towards a smarter and safer future,” said Kyle Jessen, Managing Director, Commercial Industries, Google Cloud. Westinghouse’s AI solutions, backed by 75 years of proprietary nuclear data, provide data-driven insights to optimize operations, ensuring reliable and cost-effective electricity for homes and businesses.

Global Impact and Scalability

Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactor, known for its passive safety systems and modular design, is the only Generation III+ reactor fully licensed and ready for construction in the U.S. The partnership with Google Cloud enhances the deployment of AP1000, AP300 small modular reactors, and eVinci microreactors worldwide. With six AP1000 units operational globally and 18 expected by 2030, this collaboration positions Westinghouse to meet growing energy demands, particularly for AI-driven data centers, while supporting carbon-free energy goals.

Westinghouse’s collaboration with Google Cloud marks a significant advancement in nuclear technology, leveraging AI to streamline construction and enhance operational efficiency. By combining cutting-edge AI with decades of nuclear expertise, this partnership paves the way for safer, more cost-effective nuclear energy solutions worldwide.
