Postman has acquired Fern, a developer experience company specializing in tools for creating polished API documentation and generating production-ready Software Development Kits (SDKs). This strategic acquisition strengthens Postman's platform by enhancing the critical consumption side of the API lifecycle, helping businesses deliver APIs that are easier for developers to adopt and use effectively.
Postman acquires developer experience company Fern.
Fern's tools help create beautiful, customizable API documentation (Fern Docs).
It also generates idiomatic, production-ready SDKs across nine programming languages.
The entire Fern team is joining Postman; the product and brand will continue unchanged.
Fern is trusted by over 200 companies, including Square, Twilio, and Adobe.
The move aims to improve API adoption by focusing on documentation and client libraries.
While Postman is renowned for its API development and testing tools, the acquisition of Fern directly addresses the subsequent challenge of API consumption. Great API design alone doesn't guarantee adoption; clear documentation and easy-to-use client SDKs are critical for developer productivity. Fern's tools are designed to reduce this friction: Fern Docs supports modern "docs-as-code" workflows, and its SDK Generator automates the creation of high-quality client libraries, eliminating the manual, error-prone process of building and maintaining them.
Postman CEO Abhinav Asthana emphasized the shared vision. “Great APIs are defined by great developer experiences. Fern shares our belief that documentation and SDKs are critical to API adoption. By bringing Fern into the Postman family, we’re helping more teams deliver APIs that developers love to use.”
Fern will continue to operate its existing products and roadmap under the Postman umbrella, now backed by greater resources and a massive potential customer base. Fern co-founder Danny Sheridan noted the opportunity: “Joining Postman allows us to accelerate that mission while staying focused on what we do best: helping teams deliver great docs and SDKs for their APIs.”
The integration provides Fern with access to Postman's vast network of over 500,000 organizations, including 98% of the Fortune 500. This significantly expands the reach for Fern's solutions, which are already used by more than 200 companies like Square, Auth0, and Adobe.
By incorporating Fern's capabilities, Postman moves closer to offering a more comprehensive solution that spans the entire API lifecycle—from initial design and testing in Postman to the final delivery of consumable, well-documented APIs with Fern. This positions Postman to better serve the needs of businesses in an API-first world where the developer experience is a key determinant of an API's success.
