Planet Labs PBC, a leading provider of daily satellite imagery and geospatial insights, announced on July 1, 2025, that it has secured four significant contracts for its AI-enabled solutions in the Defense & Intelligence sector, following its June 4, 2025, earnings call. These wins, leveraging Planet’s proprietary satellite data and advanced AI, highlight growing global demand for its innovative approach to national security.
Planet Labs secures four major AI-enabled defense contracts in June 2025.
€240M German contract includes multi-year PlanetScope and AI solutions.
Expanded U.S. DoD contract supports Indo-Pacific Command with AI insights.
Seven-figure deals with U.S. Navy and NATO enhance maritime surveillance.
National Reconnaissance Office extends Planet’s EOCL contract through October 2025.
Stock surged 244% over the past year, trading at $6.305 as of July 2, 2025.
The contracts strengthen Planet’s position in delivering AI-driven situational awareness for national security:
German Government (€240M): A multi-year agreement funded by Germany provides dedicated capacity on Pelican satellites for high-resolution imagery and AI-enabled solutions, with an eight-figure annual contract value for PlanetScope data. Revenue recognition begins in January 2026.
U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU): An expanded Hybrid Space Architecture (HSA) contract supports the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) with AI-driven indications and warnings for regional threat monitoring.
U.S. Navy: A seven-figure expansion enhances Maritime Domain Awareness over the Pacific Ocean, leveraging Planet’s AI capabilities for vessel tracking and monitoring.
NATO: A seven-figure contract, announced on June 12, 2025, delivers persistent space-based surveillance and Maritime Domain Awareness, powered by PlanetScope and AI analytics.
Additionally, the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) extended Planet’s Electro-Optical Commercial Layer (EOCL) contract through October 2025, ensuring continued daily monitoring and high-resolution tasking data.
Planet’s unique dataset, covering 150 million square kilometers of land and 20 million square kilometers of ocean daily, enables AI models to detect “unknown unknowns” across vast regions. This shifts intelligence from reactive reconnaissance to proactive threat detection, providing governments with critical peripheral vision. Will Marshall, CEO and Co-Founder, says: “Our strategic decision to focus on AI-enabled solutions built on our daily satellite data was clearly the right decision. Nations are showing strong demand for these solutions for ‘peripheral vision’ – the ability to identify and understand threats across their region.”
As shown in the finance card above, Planet Labs’ stock (NYSE: PL) trades at $6.305, reflecting a 244% increase over the past year, driven by strong contract momentum. The company reported Q1 FY2026 revenue of $66.3M, up 10% year-over-year, with a $527M backlog and 59% non-GAAP gross margin. Despite not updating its fiscal year guidance, Planet’s $226M cash balance supports its $50–65M FY2026 capital expenditures. Ashley Johnson, President and CFO, says: “These wins clearly demonstrate the results of our go-to-market and product focus. We’re making a strategic shift towards downstream solutions, which is validated with significant customer wins such as those announced today.”
Planet’s focus on AI-driven geospatial solutions positions it to capture a growing share of the $100B+ defense intelligence market, with its cost-efficient satellite constellation and analytics driving global security advancements.
