OpenAI and Amazon have unveiled a landmark multi-year strategic partnership to accelerate AI innovation for enterprises, startups, and consumers globally. Amazon will invest $50 billion in OpenAI, beginning with an initial $15 billion commitment and an additional $35 billion subject to certain conditions in the coming months. The collaboration expands their existing relationship, combining OpenAI’s frontier AI models with AWS’s infrastructure, custom silicon, and global reach to deliver advanced, production-scale generative AI capabilities.
The Stateful Runtime Environment represents a next-generation developer platform that enables OpenAI models to maintain context, access compute, memory, identity, and tools across ongoing workflows and projects. It integrates natively with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and AWS infrastructure services, allowing seamless operation alongside existing AWS-based applications. This environment is expected to launch in the coming months and is optimized specifically for AWS hardware.
OpenAI Frontier, the company’s most advanced enterprise platform, will be exclusively distributed through AWS for third-party customers. Frontier allows organizations to build, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents that operate across real business systems with shared context, built-in governance, and enterprise-grade security. By eliminating infrastructure management burdens, Frontier simplifies the transition from AI experimentation to secure, global-scale production deployments.
OpenAI will consume approximately 2 gigawatts of AWS Trainium capacity to meet surging demand for its advanced platforms and workloads. This includes current Trainium3 chips and the next-generation Trainium4, slated for delivery starting in 2027, which promises major gains in FP4 compute performance, memory bandwidth, and high-bandwidth memory capacity. The commitment enhances efficiency, lowers costs for large-scale intelligence production, and provides OpenAI with long-term, purpose-built silicon capacity alongside AWS’s broader compute ecosystem.
OpenAI and Amazon will jointly develop tailored models to power Amazon’s customer-facing products and services. These customized models will offer Amazon developers additional high-performance options beyond the existing Amazon Nova family, enabling faster innovation and scaled delivery of AI-enhanced experiences.
“OpenAI and Amazon share a belief that AI should show up in ways that are practical and genuinely useful for people,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. “Combining OpenAI’s models with Amazon’s infrastructure and global reach helps us put powerful AI into the hands of businesses and users at real scale.”
“We have lots of developers and companies eager to run services powered by OpenAI models on AWS, and our unique collaboration with OpenAI to provide stateful runtime environments will change what’s possible for customers building AI apps and agents,” said Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon. “We continue to be impressed with what OpenAI is building, and we're excited not only about their choosing to go big on our custom AI silicon (Trainium), but also our opportunity to invest in the company and partnership over the long-term.”
This partnership positions AWS customers to access OpenAI’s latest breakthroughs more easily while enabling OpenAI to scale its infrastructure efficiently on purpose-built technology. It marks a significant step in making advanced, stateful AI capabilities widely available for production use across industries.
