Healthcare organizations face mounting challenges as legacy systems impede the adoption of modern technologies like AI and telehealth. A recent report from SOTI, highlights the urgent need for upgraded IT infrastructure to enhance patient care, improve data security, and streamline device management.

Quick Intel

  • 97% of healthcare IT decision makers report reliance on legacy systems.

  • AI usage in healthcare surged to 81% in 2025, aiding data analysis and diagnostics.

  • 65% of organizations use outdated systems for IoT and telehealth devices.

  • Legacy systems cause downtime (59%) and increase security risks (45%).

  • Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solutions are critical for secure device management.

  • Data security is a top concern for 43% of healthcare IT leaders globally.

AI Adoption Drives Healthcare Transformation

The SOTI report, Healthcare’s Digital Dilemma: Calculated Risks and Hidden Challenges Exposed, reveals a significant increase in AI adoption, rising from 61% in 2024 to 81% in 2025. AI is now integral to healthcare, with 60% of IT decision makers using it to process medical data, 59% to update patient records, and 40% to diagnose conditions. This shift reflects a growing reliance on AI to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. However, legacy systems pose significant barriers to fully leveraging these advancements.

Legacy Systems Undermine Efficiency

Globally, 96% of IT leaders report challenges with legacy systems, particularly in integrating IoT and telehealth solutions. Nearly all organizations (99%) use connected devices or telehealth, which improve accessibility and communication. Yet, 65% rely on unintegrated, outdated systems, with Australia (77%), the UK (73%), and Canada (71%) facing the highest issues. "While technology adoption is advancing and AI is surging in the sector, our latest report shows significant challenges around patient data security and device management being experienced," says Shash Anand, SVP of Product Strategy at SOTI. These systems hinder interoperability, limit real-time data access, and increase downtime (59%) and security vulnerabilities (45%).

Device Management Struggles Persist

Legacy technology complicates device management, with 38% of IT decision makers unable to deploy or manage new devices effectively, 38% lacking remote support capabilities, and 39% spending excessive time on issue resolution. The UK (47%), Canada (46%), and Australia (43%) report the highest difficulties. Security concerns are paramount, with 43% of organizations citing data or device security as their top IT challenge. In France, security concerns rose from 25% in 2024 to 51% in 2025, with similar increases in Canada (39% to 53%), Australia (39% to 53%), and Germany (24% to 41%).

EMM Solutions as the Path Forward

To address these challenges, healthcare organizations must adopt Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solutions. "Managing shared device security remains a leading IT issue. Basic MDMs no longer meet the demands of today’s complex digital environment," says Stephanie Lopinski, VP of Global Marketing at SOTI. EMM solutions provide centralized deployment, enhanced security, and scalable management, enabling IT teams to ensure compliance and reduce risks. These tools are critical for closing the technology gap and supporting secure, efficient operations.

Urgent Need for IT Modernization

The SOTI report underscores the necessity for healthcare organizations to prioritize IT infrastructure upgrades. By investing in robust EMM solutions and modernizing legacy systems, healthcare providers can enhance patient outcomes, strengthen data security, and improve operational efficiency. "To reduce patient risk and improve outcomes, the sector must invest in strong Enterprise Mobility Management solutions for full device visibility, operational intelligence and remote troubleshooting, to help close the technology gap," adds Anand. This shift is essential to fully capitalize on AI, IoT, and telehealth advancements.

Healthcare organizations stand at a critical juncture. Modernizing IT infrastructure with EMM solutions and phasing out legacy systems will unlock the full potential of emerging technologies, ensuring secure, efficient, and patient-centric care.
