As recession fears grip the U.S., job seekers are grappling with a sobering reality: even top performers may not be immune to job insecurity. A recent Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll survey reveals widespread anxiety, with 73% of job seekers believing no job is secure regardless of performance, and 71% stating job security is becoming obsolete. This uncertainty is driving significant changes in how Americans approach their careers, pushing them toward resilience and adaptability.
The Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll survey, conducted from June 12 to 27, 2025, highlights a dramatic shift in job seeker sentiment. A striking 67% of employed job seekers report feeling less stable in their careers compared to previous years, with Gen Z workers particularly affected—33% strongly agree their career stability has eroded, compared to 22% of Millennials and Gen X. This pervasive uncertainty is reshaping career priorities across generations.
Economic concerns are significantly altering job search behaviors. While 50% of job seekers anticipate a recession within the next 12 months and 24% expect it within six months, 9% believe the U.S. is already in one. These fears translate into actionable changes: 74% express concern about finding a job during a recession, with 32% very concerned, particularly among those earning under $50,000 annually (82% vs. 72% for higher earners). Additionally, 73% worry that jobs accepted now may be at risk if the economy worsens, and 71% feel compelled to settle for roles below their qualifications.
To navigate this uncertain landscape, job seekers are adopting flexible strategies. The survey finds 65% are less willing to negotiate salary or benefits due to recession fears. Other adaptations include 38% exploring different work environments, 31% applying to roles outside their target industry, 27% considering positions they’re overqualified for, 23% open to relocation, and 21% willing to accept lower salaries. Notably, 65% view contract and freelance work as offering more control than traditional full-time roles, reflecting a shift toward greater career autonomy.
Despite widespread anxiety, many job seekers retain trust in their employers. The survey shows 73% are confident in their company’s ability to provide short-term job security (28% very confident), and 69% trust in long-term security (26% very confident). However, 74% believe government policies have a greater impact on job security than company leadership decisions, highlighting the influence of external factors on workforce stability.
"In times of economic uncertainty, job seekers should focus on adaptability and self-investment," said Bob Funk Jr., CEO, President and Chairman of Express Employment International. "Expand your search, sharpen your skills and stay open to new opportunities, even those outside your comfort zone. The most successful candidates aren't just looking for jobs; they're building resilience for whatever comes next."
The survey underscores a critical moment for U.S. job seekers, who are navigating a volatile job market with resilience and strategic adaptability. By embracing diverse work arrangements, upskilling, and flexible job search approaches, candidates are preparing for an uncertain economic future. As recession fears persist, Staffmark Group’s insights suggest that building career resilience is key to thriving in today’s challenging environment.
