Insight Global, a leading staffing and professional services firm, today announced the results of its 2025 Employee Sentiment Report, revealing critical insights into how American workers feel about their jobs—and what employers can do to improve engagement and retention.

The independent survey, conducted by Atomik Research, polled over 900 U.S. workers across technology, finance, engineering, and consulting sectors. Data from the report reveals that only 35% of employees feel engaged at work, and the same percentage feel essential in their roles.

Quick Intel

  • Only 35% of U.S. workers in tech, finance, engineering, and consulting feel engaged or essential at work.
  • 4 in 5 workers would stay longer with better onboarding; 22% leave within 90 days due to poor training.
  • Strong workplace culture makes workers 8x more likely to feel engaged.
  • It takes 6-7 months for workers to feel settled in their role.
  • Survey of 905 workers (501 full-time, 404 contractors) with +/-4-5% margin of error.
  • Actionable strategies include role-specific onboarding, culture-building, and linking work to purpose.

Addressing Low Engagement in Professional Services

"These numbers are a wake-up call," said Jessica Calzaretta, President at Insight Global. "When employees don't feel connected or valued, productivity and retention suffer. But the good news is, companies can change this—starting with how they onboard and support their people."

Key findings from the report include:

4 in 5 workers say they'd stay longer in a role with better onboarding

22% have left a job within the first 90 days, often due to poor training

Workers are 8x more likely to feel engaged in a strong workplace culture

Workers say it takes them 6-7 months to feel settled in their role

The report also outlines actionable strategies for employers, including role-specific onboarding, intentional culture-building, and connecting daily work to a larger purpose.

Building Resilient Cultures for Retention

"A defined culture is not a nice-to-have," said Brindy Pickett, Vice President of Consultant Engagement at Insight Global. "We've found it's a foundational driver of engagement, retention, and performance. If you're intentional about the culture you want, it breeds success."

Insight Global's "people-first" approach continues to guide its partnerships with organizations nationwide, helping them build stronger teams, more resilient cultures, and greater technology for its customers.

Survey Methodology

Insight Global commissioned Atomik Research to conduct an independent online survey of 905 U.S. workers employed in the professional service industries—technology/IT, finance/accounting, engineering and consulting. The sample consists of 501 workers who are full-time employees and 404 workers who report working as an independent contractor in the professional service industries are currently (n=384) or within 12 months of taking the survey (n=20).

Further, in order to qualify, participants who disclosed a current or recent status as an independent contractor were also required to disclose that they currently or formerly worked as an independent contractor for a competitor of a prior employer.

The margin of error for the sample of 501 full-time employees is +/- 4 percentage points with a confidence level of 95 percent. The margin of error for the sample of 404 independent contractors is +/- 5 percentage points with a confidence level of 95 percent.

This report underscores the urgency for employers to prioritize engagement strategies, offering a roadmap to foster loyalty and productivity in competitive sectors.
