Mastercard is collaborating with industry leaders like Stripe, Google, and Ant International’s Antom to make secure agentic transactions accessible for digital merchants globally. By the holiday season, all U.S. Mastercard cardholders will participate in the Mastercard Agent Pay program, with Citi and U.S. Bank cardholders among the first to experience AI-enabled shopping through providers like PayOS. A global rollout will follow, scaling trusted, AI-powered payment solutions worldwide.
Mastercard is introducing a suite of tools to accelerate AI integration in payments. The Agent Toolkit, available on Mastercard Developers, enables AI assistants to access and interpret API documentation via the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, supporting platforms like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. The Agent Sign-Up simplifies access to AI-enabled Mastercard products, while Insight Tokens provide a secure way for agents to deliver personalized consumer experiences with consent. Additionally, Agentic Consulting Services offer expert guidance to issuers, acquirers, and merchants to design intelligent shopping solutions. “AI-powered payments aren’t just a trend — they’re a transformation,” said Craig Vosburg, chief services officer at Mastercard. “Payments must be native to the agentic experience. We’re building the infrastructure for a new generation of intelligent transactions, where consumers and developers can empower AI agents to act on their behalf with trust, transparency and precision.”
Mastercard is working with the FIDO Alliance’s Payments Working Group to develop a verifiable credential standard for payments, ensuring trust in transaction details like amount, merchant, and product. This builds on Mastercard’s expertise in contactless and tokenization standards, creating a secure foundation for agentic payments. “We’re working with partners across the ecosystem to build the standards and tools that will define agentic commerce,” said Jorn Lambert, chief product officer at Mastercard. “We’re committed to enabling a trusted environment for AI-powered payments to scale globally.”
Mastercard’s infrastructure is designed to support real-world agentic transactions today, with scalability for future adoption. By combining innovative tools, industry partnerships, and robust standards, Mastercard is laying the groundwork for a new era of intelligent, secure payments that empower consumers and businesses alike.
