Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting Netherlands has released its “Work Pressure or Job Satisfaction?” survey, conducted in May 2025, offering insights into the factors shaping job satisfaction among Dutch accounting professionals. The findings highlight the critical role of workplace culture, meaningful work, and automation in fostering happiness, alongside challenges like heavy workloads and staff shortages.

  • Dutch accountants rate job satisfaction at 6.6/10 on average.

  • Positive workplace atmosphere (54%) and meaningful work (52%) drive satisfaction.

  • Automation boosts satisfaction, with 98% citing its benefits (7.1 rating).

  • Excessive workloads (79%) and staff shortages (88%) hinder performance.

  • Netherlands leads Europe in cloud adoption (55% of firms).

Workplace Atmosphere Fuels Satisfaction

A positive company atmosphere is a top driver of job satisfaction, cited by 54% of respondents, followed closely by interesting work (52%) and appreciation from colleagues or clients (41%). “The future of the accounting profession calls for greater focus on employee well-being and educational innovation,” said Jeffrey Smit, Vice President & General Manager, Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting, Europe Region West. These factors underscore the shift toward accountants as strategic advisors leveraging data and technology.

Automation as a Game-Changer

Automation is a cornerstone of job satisfaction, with 98% of respondents noting its positive impact, assigning it an average satisfaction rating of 7.1. While invoice processing and reporting are widely automated, professionals expressed a strong desire to further automate customer input and file management, aligning with the Netherlands’ leadership in digital adoption, where 55% of firms fully utilize cloud technology—well above the European average of 31%.

Challenges of Workload and Staffing

Despite high satisfaction in some areas, 79% of respondents reported excessive workloads, and 88% felt the impact of staff shortages, with 54% noting significant effects on their daily work. Tight deadlines (29%), endless small tasks (20%), and technical issues (13%) were identified as major energy drains, highlighting the need for better workload management and staffing solutions.

Generational and Leadership Gaps

The survey revealed generational friction, with 66% of respondents noting differences in ambition and work-life balance expectations. Additionally, professionals expressed a desire for improved leadership and clearer career development paths to address frustrations and enhance retention.

The Wolters Kluwer survey underscores the evolving role of Dutch accountants, with automation and workplace culture driving satisfaction amidst challenges like workloads and staffing shortages. By prioritizing technology and employee well-being, firms can build a more resilient and fulfilled workforce, aligning with global trends in the accounting profession.
