Dramatic Surge in SMB Cyberattacks

The N-able 2025 Threat Report reveals a staggering increase in cyberattacks on SMBs, with detected threats jumping from 48,749 in June 2024 to over 13.3 million by June 2025. This 27,000% surge reflects SMBs’ growing investment in security tools to monitor and mitigate risks. Contrary to the belief that SMBs are too small to be targeted, cybercriminals are exploiting their limited defenses for faster payoffs, favoring low-effort attacks over complex enterprise breaches.

AI-Powered Social Engineering Threats

Cybercriminals are leveraging generative AI to enhance social engineering attacks, particularly phishing. These AI-driven phishing messages mimic real people and writing styles, making them highly convincing and capable of deceiving even tech-savvy employees. “Adversaries are constantly developing and deploying attacks that exploit common gaps in visibility and response. SMBs need solutions that deliver coverage across the threat lifecycle and fit within operational constrains – exactly what N-able provides,” said Kevin O’Connor, Director of Threat Research at N-able.

Ransomware’s Persistent Threat

Ransomware remains a significant challenge, with N-able reporting nearly 1.9 million detections in the first half of 2025. These attacks exploit vulnerabilities in SMBs’ defenses, often targeting both live systems and backups. The report underscores the need for robust, proactive measures to counter this pervasive threat, which can lead to substantial financial and operational losses.

Building Cyber Resilience Through Basics

Despite the complexity of modern cyber threats, effective defense lies in fundamental practices. “The findings align closely with what we’re seeing, the pace of change in cybersecurity is relentless. It’s easy to get caught up in the complexity of today’s landscape: AI-driven threats, ransomware attacks, evolving regulations, and a flood of new tools and technologies. But real success comes from going back to the basics. Things like maintaining patches, ensuring reliable backups, continuous monitoring, endpoint protection, and having clear processes in place – businesses can’t afford to operate in reactive mode,” said Vinod Paul, President at Align. N-able’s unified platform provides SMBs with enterprise-grade visibility, protection, and response capabilities tailored to their needs.

N-able’s 2025 Threat Report highlights the critical need for SMBs to adopt comprehensive cybersecurity solutions. By focusing on proactive measures and leveraging platforms like N-able’s, SMBs can strengthen their defenses against the escalating threat landscape, ensuring resilience and operational continuity. The company will showcase its platform at Black Hat 2025, August 5–7, in Las Vegas.
