Italy Balances AI Innovation and Security: Capterra Study

According to new research from Capterra, Italy demonstrates a strong inclination toward innovation while maintaining a cautious approach to protecting sensitive business data. The study reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is a major driver in project management (PM) software purchasing decisions — yet security remains the top concern for Italian buyers.

Key findings:

  • 43% of Italian PM software buyers cite the addition of AI capabilities and improved integrations as the main reasons for purchasing new tools.

  • 64% consider security “critical” when researching and implementing PM software — the highest concern among all factors.

  • 26% say security issues directly triggered their most recent software purchase.

While AI adoption accelerates innovation, it also introduces new data flows and integration points, heightening exposure to cybersecurity risks.

AI Adoption Challenges and Human Skills Gap

Despite AI’s growing presence, 35% of Italian respondents identify adoption difficulties as their top challenge, often due to skills shortages, onboarding gaps, and workflow misalignment. Globally, 41% report similar difficulties.

Interestingly, automation is amplifying — not diminishing — the need for human skills. 51% of Italian project managers report using more emotional intelligence since integrating AI into their workflows. Abilities such as conflict resolution, negotiation, and strategic communication are becoming critical for managing complex, AI-enhanced environments.

Strategic Recommendations

Capterra suggests that companies should:

  • Prioritize security-by-design principles when selecting AI-powered tools.

  • Demand transparency from vendors regarding data governance and protection.

  • Choose software with intuitive onboarding to bridge skill gaps.

  • Provide continuous training in emotional intelligence and communication to maximize value from automation.

“Project management software does more than just manage projects — it empowers people through intelligent and responsible automation,” the report concludes.
