ISACA, a global leader in IT governance and audit, announced on July 24, 2025, the expansion of eligibility for its Advanced in AI Audit (AAIA) certification, the first advanced audit-specific artificial intelligence credential. By adding six new global credentials to the prerequisites, ISACA aims to empower a broader community of experienced auditors to validate their expertise in AI-focused audits.
Previously, only holders of ISACA’s Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), the Institute of Internal Auditors’ Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Certified Public Accountant (CPA) were eligible for the AAIA. The expanded prerequisites now include:
This expansion reflects ISACA’s commitment to serving a global audit community, enabling more professionals to demonstrate their ability to address AI-related risks and opportunities. “As a global organization, we are committed to providing professionals around the world with the training, resources, and credentialing to help them advance their careers,” said Shannon Donahue, ISACA Chief Content and Publishing Officer.
Launched in May 2025, the AAIA certification is designed for experienced auditors navigating AI’s evolving role in technology and compliance. It validates expertise across three domains:
The credential equips auditors to streamline processes, ensure compliance, and mitigate risks in AI-driven systems, addressing a growing demand for AI literacy, as noted in a LinkedIn report listing AI skills among the fastest-growing professional competencies.
To earn the AAIA, candidates must hold one of the eligible certifications, pass the AAIA exam, and apply within one year of passing. The exam is computer-based, offered at PSI testing centers or via remote proctoring, with a 12-month eligibility period post-registration. Preparation resources include the AAIA Review Manual, Online Review Course, and Questions, Answers, and Explanations Database (QAE), each providing one year of access.
An ISACA survey found that 85% of digital trust professionals, including auditors, believe AI skills are critical within two years to advance their careers, with 94% emphasizing their importance for digital trust roles. The AAIA addresses this need, enabling auditors to future-proof their skillsets amid rapid AI adoption.
ISACA’s expansion of AAIA eligibility underscores its 55-year legacy of supporting the global audit community, positioning certified professionals as leaders in AI-driven auditing.
