The Epilepsy Foundation of America has unveiled Sage, a groundbreaking AI Assistant developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Built on Amazon Bedrock and powered by Anthropic’s Claude, Sage is engineered to provide compassionate, context-aware, and clinically accurate responses. Unlike traditional search engines, Sage delivers precise, trustworthy information tailored to the needs of the epilepsy community, drawing from over 25,000 pages of expertly curated content on epilepsy.com.
Sage is uniquely designed to understand emotional nuances and track conversations over time, making it a reliable companion for those navigating epilepsy. "This new technology is an extension of the Foundation’s mission to ensure that no one faces epilepsy alone," said David Jost, Chief Technology Innovations Officer, Epilepsy Foundation of America. Whether addressing a new diagnosis, exploring treatment options, or supporting a loved one, Sage provides clear guidance in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German.
Leveraging Amazon Bedrock, Sage bypasses the limitations of open-ended online searches, offering instant, relevant answers grounded in clinical expertise and community experiences. "We are honored to support the Epilepsy Foundation of America in delivering a solution that brings reliable, accessible, and compassionate support," said Jeff Kratz, Vice President of Nonprofits and Worldwide Public Sector Industries at Amazon Web Services. This collaboration highlights the potential of cloud technology to drive mission-critical innovations for healthcare communities.
Sage does not replace human interaction but enhances it. The Epilepsy Foundation’s Helpline, staffed by trained professionals, remains available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET starting August 25, 2025. "With the help of Amazon Web Services, we built both a tool and companion," said Bernice Martin Lee, Chief Executive Officer, Epilepsy Foundation of America. Sage ensures continuous, personalized support, making it easier for users to access epilepsy resources whenever needed.
Sage is now live on epilepsy.com, ready to assist anyone seeking epilepsy-related information or support. This innovative tool reflects the Foundation’s commitment to empowering the epilepsy community with cutting-edge technology and compassionate care.
Epilepsy is the most common chronic brain disorder in the world, affecting people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 3.4 million Americans live with active epilepsy. The condition is defined by a tendency to experience seizures—sudden, abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain that can disrupt behavior, awareness, and bodily control. Beyond seizures, epilepsy can also lead to challenges such as fatigue, memory difficulties, mood changes, anxiety, and trouble concentrating, all of which can significantly impact daily life.
Since 2006, Amazon Web Services has been the world's most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud.
