The AI Alliance’s new non-profit entities are designed to expand the scope and impact of its open-source AI initiatives. By establishing a 501(c)(3) research and education lab and a 501(c)(6) technology and advocacy association, the alliance will drive collaborative projects, secure funding, and promote responsible AI development across industries like manufacturing, scientific research, education, and healthcare.
The 501(c)(3) lab will focus on managing scientific and open-source projects that enable community experimentation and learning. It aims to create accessible, high-quality open-source AI models and data sets. The lab’s board, co-chaired by Anthony Annunziata of IBM and a Meta representative, includes leaders from BrightQuery, Common Crawl, MLCommons, and ETH Zurich, ensuring diverse expertise to guide open AI research.
The 501(c)(6) association will prioritize global engagement on open-source AI policy, advocacy, and technology development. It seeks to establish industry standards and best practices, ensuring open-source AI is responsibly developed and delivers broad economic benefits. Co-chaired by Annunziata and a Meta representative, the board includes executives from Aitomatic and ServiceNow, with plans to expand for greater diversity.
“Both boards expect the number of board members to increase as AI Alliance membership and projects grow in order to represent global and organizational diversity,” the AI Alliance stated, emphasizing inclusivity. The program steering committee, comprising representatives from 20 member organizations, will continue to provide strategic oversight, ensuring alignment with the alliance’s mission of open, trusted, and safe AI.
The AI Alliance’s key priorities include AI agents, safety and governance, open data sets, models, and evaluation benchmarks. These focus areas aim to address technical and societal challenges while promoting AI applications in critical domains. The non-profits will also undertake fundraising to support these initiatives, enhancing the global open-source AI ecosystem.
The establishment of these non-profit entities marks a significant milestone for the AI Alliance, reinforcing its commitment to open-source AI innovation. By fostering collaboration, advancing research, and advocating for responsible AI policies, the alliance is poised to shape a trusted, accessible, and impactful AI future for global society.
