TalentSmartEQ, the world’s leading provider of emotional intelligence (EQ) solutions, has released its 2026 State of EQ Report. Drawing from insights provided by nearly 700 leadership, HR, and L&D professionals, along with EQ data from over 23,000 individuals, the report demonstrates that human skills are the strongest predictor of organizational performance in an AI-driven economy. While technology remains essential, EQ, adaptability, critical thinking, and communication enable leaders and teams to make technology truly effective.
Survey respondents ranked the most critical skills for future success as technology first, followed by adaptability to change, critical thinking, emotional intelligence (EQ), and communication. These form a “human skills stack” that amplifies technology’s impact. EQ sits at the center, determining how leaders navigate complexity—handling priority conflicts, delivering difficult feedback, and making high-stakes decisions with partial information. Technical excellence delivers results only when matched by strong human capability.
Economic uncertainty emerges as the primary anticipated business disruptor. Organizational change continues to intensify, with 54 percent of respondents reporting frequent or constant change—an increase from 45 percent in 2025. Despite this pace, just 41 percent of organizations consider themselves well-prepared to manage disruption, emphasizing the need for leaders who can maintain effectiveness under sustained pressure.
While external challenges receive significant attention, the report identifies internal alignment as the biggest constraint on execution. Misalignment undermines trust, delays decision-making, and diminishes overall results, making cohesive leadership and team alignment essential for performance.
A notable gap exists between leaders’ self-perceived priorities and the realities observed by their teams. Fewer than 5 percent of leaders share the same top three development priorities identified by their raters, and 45 percent show no overlap between the behaviors they aim to improve and those their teams view as limiting effectiveness. This misalignment often results in development efforts that fail to translate into measurable performance improvements.
