New Relic, the Intelligent Observability Company, today announced innovations designed to simplify and de-risk OpenTelemetry (OTel) adoption for enterprises. The new capabilities—APM hybrid agents, OTel-based infrastructure monitoring with Infra NRDOT, and dedicated Collector Observability—remove integration complexity, eliminate massive refactoring needs, and provide a cost-effective bridge to open standards without losing functionality or visibility.
OpenTelemetry adoption continues to grow, with nearly half of organizations using it in production. However, the transition often forces a difficult choice: adopt open standards and sacrifice existing features or stick with proprietary agents and risk isolation. New Relic eliminates this “migration tax” by offering backward compatibility and mixed-mode interoperability, allowing teams to modernize telemetry stacks at their own pace.
“We believe that vendor lock-in should never be a barrier to innovation. Accessing the power of OTel should be seamless, allowing every business to leverage open standards without the traditional complexity,” said New Relic Chief Product Officer Brian Emerson. “With our newest capabilities, we’ve removed the innovation tax many enterprises face when looking to embrace open standards. With an easier migration to OTel, organizations avoid expensive engineering toil, retraining costs, and operational disruptions. Businesses can finally adopt OTel at their own pace, turning open standards into a strategic tailwind rather than a technical burden.”
New Relic APM agents now offer enhanced OTel compatibility, supporting direct consumption of telemetry from third-party open source libraries instrumented with OTel APIs. This hybrid approach maintains comprehensive visibility across the software ecosystem while preserving existing New Relic capabilities. Teams can adopt OTel incrementally, ensuring traces remain intact across fragmented environments and avoiding the operational disruptions of full migrations.
Infra NRDOT eliminates the need to build custom OTel pipelines from scratch. It provides native visibility for hosts and applications, integrated into New Relic curated experiences and dashboards. The Adaptive Telemetry Processor filters noise, ensuring customers pay only for critical insights and maintaining cost efficiency while standardizing on open standards.
Operating OTel Collectors often leaves teams without clear visibility into resource saturation, configuration errors, or connectivity problems. New Relic’s Collector Observability delivers dedicated, real-time monitoring of collector health and performance, enabling proactive bottleneck resolution and ensuring reliable, scalable OTel deployments without data loss.
These innovations empower organizations to embrace OpenTelemetry confidently, aligning with New Relic’s commitment to vendor-neutral, implementation-neutral observability that accelerates modernization without added complexity or risk.
