team.blue has published its 2025 Digital Maturity Report, based on responses from over 8,000 small and medium-sized businesses across more than 30 European countries. The findings paint a clear picture: European SMBs are eager to embrace digital transformation and AI, but they are held back by confusion, complexity, and a lack of confidence rather than resistance.

Quick Intel

  • 30% of SMBs say they don’t know which digital tools they should be using
  • 26% lack the skills or knowledge to get started
  • 1 in 5 cite time/resource constraints as the biggest barrier
  • Average confidence in choosing and using digital tools: only 6/10
  • AI adoption: 18% use extensively, 33% experimenting, 25% have no plans (60% among businesses >10 years old)
  • 48% trust AI less than human work (data security, accuracy, brand voice concerns)

The Real Barrier Is Uncertainty, Not Reluctance

The research shows that small businesses overwhelmingly recognize the potential of digital and AI tools – more than half believe AI will make them more competitive. Yet the ecosystem often assumes a baseline digital fluency that many simply don’t have.

"Technology, especially AI, has outpaced the capacity of many small businesses to keep up," said Claudio Corbetta, Group CEO of team.blue. "What we're seeing isn't a gap in ambition or motivation, it's a gap in comprehension and perception. When we simplify the path and make tools genuinely usable, AI stops being intimidating and starts becoming a catalyst for creativity, efficiency and growth."

What SMBs Actually Want: Guidance, Not Just More Tools

The strongest demand is for clear, practical support:

  • 50% want step-by-step guidance
  • 42% need advice on which tools to choose
  • 38% value training and workshops

"Digital tools only matter when they empower the people behind them," added Jonas Dhaenens, founder and president of team.blue. "Our focus is on making that experience more accessible and secure, because the prosperity of small businesses directly shapes the vitality of our communities."

The report was developed in collaboration with team.blue brands across Europe including Combell, Simply.com, Loopia, Nominalia, Register 365, TransIP, and many others.
