TalentLMS has released its new Speed-to-Skill Report, highlighting how rapidly changing workplace demands and AI-driven transformation are outpacing traditional employee training models. Based on a survey of 1,500 U.S. respondents, the report examines how organizations identify, develop, and apply new workforce skills in increasingly fast-moving business environments.

  • More than half of respondents say they learn new skills through hands-on work.
  • Nearly half report that some job skills became outdated within five years.
  • Managers are struggling to predict future workforce skill requirements.
  • AI is accelerating the pace of skills obsolescence across industries.
  • The report outlines strategies for building skills faster within organizations.

TalentLMS Highlights the Growing Speed-to-Skill Challenge

The report explores the growing disconnect between the pace of work and the speed at which organizations develop workforce skills. According to the findings, 53% of respondents say they primarily learn new skills by doing their jobs and figuring things out independently rather than through formal training programs.

At the same time, workplace pressures continue to impact employee learning opportunities. Forty-four percent of respondents say shifting work priorities push learning aside, while 27% report that learning is not effectively integrated into their daily workflows.

"AI isn't just changing the skills people need, it's accelerating how fast those skills expire," said Dimitris Tsingos, CEO of Epignosis, parent company of TalentLMS. "Employees are already adapting in real time, but organizations are still relying on training cycles built for a slower world. The ones that close the gap between learning and doing will lead. The rest will keep training for a world that's already moved on."

AI and Workplace Change Are Accelerating Skills Obsolescence

The report found that nearly half of respondents (47%) believe some of their job skills have become outdated within the past five years, reflecting the growing impact of AI, automation, and evolving business requirements on workforce capabilities.

Managers reported feeling the effects of changing skill requirements more acutely than employees. Twenty-one percent of managers said their skills became outdated within the last year, compared to 10% of employees. Managers were also more than twice as likely to report rapid skills obsolescence within six months.

Despite the urgency, only 16% of respondents said their organizations can quickly build new skills when business needs emerge, even though 70% agreed that employees need faster methods for skill development.

Organizations Face Growing Uncertainty Around Future Skills

The report also highlighted increasing uncertainty around future workforce planning as AI continues reshaping job functions and operational workflows.

Thirty-eight percent of managers said they struggle to predict which skills their teams will require over the next 12 months, while 36% reported difficulty keeping pace with the speed at which AI is changing workforce skill demands.

TalentLMS stated that while organizations are identifying skills gaps and investing in training initiatives, learning processes continue to move more slowly than the pace of modern work. The report outlines six strategies aimed at helping businesses build workforce skills more effectively and integrate learning directly into day-to-day operations.

As AI adoption accelerates across industries, the findings underscore the growing importance of continuous learning, agile workforce development, and real-time upskilling strategies for organizations navigating rapid digital transformation.
